Pierre Gauthier-Dubédat exhibits his paintings in Saint Jean Pied de Port

Pierre Gauthier-Dubédat (Bordeaux, 1938) is an artist rooted in France's "lyrical abstraction" tradition.

After a childhood in Bayonne and a adolescence spent in Versailles, he entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, in 1955, as a pupil of the painter Maurice Brianchon.

He served as a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus from 1968 to 1974 and subsequently as the director of a fine-art publishing house in Madrid from 1974 to 1981.

He returned to France in 1981, living first in Burgundy and then in the Basque Country, in Bidache. He and his wife Pilar moved recently to Saint Jean Pied de Port, where they live in an old house on the narrow winding street that leads up to the Citadel.
