Basque language and song - a historical overview

In the context of an exhibition of paintings by Josette Dacosta, "Donibane Garazi â'€'“ Paintings of Saint Jean Pied de Port", at the Maison Française in Oxford, the director of the Basque Cultural Institute, Pantxoa Etchegoin, will give a lecture on the history of the Basque language and the tradition of Basque song.

The lecture will take place on 24 May at 5.15 p.m. in the exhibition room of the Maison Française. Free entry.

The exhibition of paintings, accompanied by a display of pinhole-camera photographs of Saint Jean Pied de Port by Abel Bourgeois, is open from 20 May to 29 May, daily from 2.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m., and on Friday 26 May from 2.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Watching order emerge from chaos

When she first began painting, Oaia Peruarena, like many artists, drew her inspiration from nature and landscapes, notably in the Basque Country's Baztan valley, where she learned to paint with local figurative artists José Mari Apezetxea and Tomás Sobrino.
