A prize of 2,000 euros and two artistic residencies in Navarre

In association with the Basque Cultural Institute and the Centre for Contemporary Art of Huarte (Navarre), we are organising the competition for the Itzal Aktiboa Prize for Young Talent in Contemporary Art 2018.

A cash prize of 2,000 euros will be awarded to the winner, and two artists will be invited to participate in artistic residencies at the Centre for Contemporary Art of Huarte.

The deadline for applications is July 15, 2018. The works of the artists chosen as finalists will be presented in a group exhibition in Saint Jean Pied de Port during October 2018. The artist-in-residence programme will run for seven weeks, from January 25 to March 3 2019.

Launched for the first time in 2011, the competition for the Itzal aktiboa Prize - Young Contemporary Art was organized again in 2013, 2015 and 2018. A fifth edition was planned for 2021 but had to be canceled because of the Covid19 pandemic.

When she first began painting, Oaia Peruarena, like many artists, drew her inspiration from nature and landscapes, notably in the Basque Country's Baztan valley, where she learned to paint with local figurative artists José Mari Apezetxea and Tomás Sobrino.
